Naoshima Island Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery, etc. Part 1

When you step outside, a stylish hallway welcomes you!

Glass is embedded in the walls, sparkling and exciting!

However, do not touch this hallway as it is one of the works of art!

When you step outside the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery building, you will see an open plaza.

It is a large, pleasant park, and children will be delighted!

On the beach, Yayoi Kusama’s “Pumpkin” is on display.

This work, displayed on a pier jutting out into the sea, is very eye-catching,

The fact that it is displayed outside the museum, rather than inside, makes it all the more magical.

This work is one of the largest “Pumpkins” that Yayoi Kusama has ever created, and it seems that she created this work with a strong sense of place.

While I was enjoying the public art in the park, it was time for my appointment at the Chichu Art Museum, so I hurried to the museum.

The Chichu Art Museum is roughly a 15 minute walk away.

After receiving an entrance guide at the annex building, we proceeded to the main building of Chichu Art Museum.

The entrance is small, not like an art museum, as shown in the photo above. The atmosphere of the museum is like a hideout.

After passing through the entrance, you are greeted by a cool concrete hallway,

If you look closely at this hallway, you will notice that it gradually narrows as you proceed. This gave me a sense of excitement, as if I was exploring a cave.

After passing through the corridor, you are greeted by the museum.

Since photography was not allowed for the exhibited works, I will introduce them in words.

In conclusion, I would say, “Very wonderful!”

Why did I think so? The works of three artists are permanently exhibited at this museum, and unlike most museums where the works of art change frequently, the way the works are exhibited is designed to bring out the maximum appeal for that particular work, and I felt the full appeal of the museum.

To briefly introduce each work, the “Waterlilies” series by Claude Monet surprised me with the size of the paintings.

Walter De Maria’s “Time/Timeless/No-Time” was a space that looked like it was cut out of a scene from a video game (those who have played The Legend of Zelda may recognize the feeling).

The “Open Field” by James Turrell was like nothing I have ever experienced before.

It was a truly amazing and fascinating museum that I still feel like I want to experience again.

You can see photos of the artworks from the link above.

After sweating profusely from all the walking, I now headed to the public bathhouse.

The bathhouse is called “I♥yu” and is an art facility where visitors can actually bathe, created by artist Shinro Ohtake.

The inside of the bathhouse was decorated with a variety of artwork, allowing visitors to experience art with their whole body.

Moreover, this sento is also visited by locals for bathing, allowing visitors to interact with the locals.

When I left the bathhouse, it was already starting to get dark, so I headed out to have dinner.

As we were walking around at random, we found a nice izakaya (Japanese-style pub), so we went in. The name of the restaurant was “ニューおりんぴあ(New Orinpia)”.

I ordered the sashimi set meal. It was very fresh and delicious. (Please note that one drink is required.)

We took the ferry back to Kagawa. Naoshima is such a fascinating place that I would like to spend a night there and visit more museums. I was able to gain new insights and impressions.

Thank you very much for the wonderful sightseeing. I would like to visit again someday.
